QuakeCon 2010 Day Three

Today was the final day of play at QuakeCon 2010 and we were busy in the tournament area from approximately 9:00am to 8:00pm this evening. QuakeCon tournament staff were playing catch up because of the network issues I'm sure everyone is familiar with. Boots and Gillz did not have a chance to leave the tournament area often in that 11 hour time span. When they were offered the chance to take a break, it was a quick one with the tournament staff fast on their heels to get into the server.

As the games progressed both Boots and Gillz continued to play their matches into the third map, swapping frags back and forth often. The sheer amount of time spent in Quake Live during this event at one time would rival time spent by a student in medical school aspiring to be a doctor. Boots and Gillz were forced to rely on Skitch and I to bring them food into the tournament area back from eating, as they did  not have a chance to leave.

Boots and Gillz progressed through the upper brackets with Gillz losing to klaovhwN then to Boots after Boots lost to id_ and was moved down. Gillz finished sixth overall and wasn't happy with his performance but couldn't complain with 5th after a disappointing finish at QuakeCon 2009. Boots worked his way through the lower bracket finals beating klaovhwN and a rematch with id_ that he desperately wanted. Boots pulled through against id_ to go on to the finals match against jovire. I went outside with Boots while he partook of a smoke and talked on the phone. I heard Boots telling his brother that he had his work cut out for him as jovire was a respectable player and good at QL. Boots was right and was beat by jovire in two maps to finish second overall.

Luckily the interruptions were limited today as the network seemed to at least function, I won't say well, but it did function. The tournament staff deserve a round of e-applause from everyone as they made everything happen, and somehow finish on time. I run my own LAN (of course not to this scale) but I couldn't imagine the logistical nightmare they had to work around to ensure they caught up with the set schedules.

Thank you QuakeCon 2010 for another three days well spent, we will see you next year!!
