Quake Tips #1 - Basics
Below is a list of some easy to learn tips for Quake that can help anyone in the game. Most tips will help the most in a one on one fight environment (1v1), but can be applied to all other game types like TDM and CA.
I've kept this as short as possible, but leaving enough to understand the concept, and determine when and where to use it. Keep in mind that some of these tips can be applied to anything that is taken in a competitive nature. So even if you play a different game, these tips can still help.
1. Know Your Terminology

"Splash Damage" - The damage done by something like a Rocket launcher. This describes the radius of damage it does to your opponent if you were to shoot a rocket close to them.
2. Quake Is Fast, But Can Be Slow
Although Quake is a very fast paced FPS, that doesn't mean you need to play it fast. The rush and thrill of running around is a good feeling, but can be a wrong move in the right situation. While most of the tips I'll be listing here is more towards dueling (1 on 1), it still will help in other modes like TDM, CA, and CTF.
Remember that there are times when you can play the game slow, and come out the player not fragged. If you're low in health, or have a weapon which you're not particularly comfortable with, it's in your best interest not to rush. There will be times when you just want to run around and get lots of frags, it's understandable. But if your someone who wants to become better at the game, the first thing to understand is that speed isn't everything. While I could go into extreme detail when to rush and when not to rush, I'll keep it short by saying only a few things. Playing slow can surprise your opponent, and give you the advantage. Slow walking makes zero sounds, making your position harder to be determined by your opponent. Take advantage of something like this, it can be extremely helpful. Since there is so much to learn and understand about it, I will be going into more detail with it in another article.
3. Don't be afraid of your weakness
Bad with rockets? Tourney7 not your best map? Constantly miss with the Railgun? Don't avoid your weaknesses, embrace them. The only way to be good with rockets, or get better at Tourney7, or hit more shots with the rail, is to use them more and more. If you have a rocket launcher in a FFA, or you're playing in a CA, use it. Don't switch to a weapon you know you're good with, use the one you're bad with. Get used to it, understand the mechanics of it, and learn how to use it, and when to use it. One of my favorite quotes that should remind you of this is "You're only as strong as your weakest link".
4. Keep Playing and Have Fun!
Although losing can be frustrating, it can help you understand what you're doing wrong, and what to improve on. If you're getting frustrated because you're losing a lot in Clan Arena, try something like CTF, where it's can be a bit slower paced compared to CA or TDM. More people in a server doesn't necessarily mean better. Find what you're comfortable with, and play with that. Just remember to have fun!
I hope this opens your mind up to the many physical and mental factors inside the game. While a mode like FFA or Clan Arena is very busy and exciting, these tips will help you in one on one fighting. My next article will be on the different types of weapons, and when it's appropriate to use each one.
