ESL Extreme Masters Global Championships Day 1-3!

It's March Madness! Gaming, that is.

This week holds the Intel Extreme Masters Global finals for ESL. These are the championship finals for Quake Live, Counter Strike 1.6, and World of Warcraft. Day two has passed of the event, and we are giving you the results and entertainment you so desperately need from the event!

Counter Strike 1.6

In 1.6 we've seen a number of upsets, most notiably in group A where team EG defeating Fnatic in group stage, but still losing to Mouz also. Even with the loss to Mouz, EG finishes first in their group. In group B, we see SK also finishing first in the group, and compLexity not making it through the group stage at all. They fell short playing against WeMadeFox, with the game ending in a tie, 15:15. Below are the final results for 1.6. To see full results of all matches, click here.

Today we saw the matches in the playoffs, and we are now down to the final four teams. Below is the playoff bracket. Who do you think will advance? Who do you think will win?

Quake Live

With technical difficulties yesterday (You can read more below about that) we did not get to see many matches played from Group A, as most of it had to be delayed until today. Today we did see some excellent Quake Live action, with some not-so-surprising upsets between a few players. In Group B we saw a saddening defeat of Dahang by Fox, someone who in this interview has said he has done little to practice for the event. Could this be just an overwheling amount of talent held by Fox? In Group A, we saw an amazing match between Cooller and Rapha, making Cooller undefeated in his Group. The interesting part of this is that it puts Rapha and Dahang in the same bracket for the Playoffs. Last time we saw the two play was the IEM North American Finals, where Dahang defeated Rapha. Could we see Rapha knocked out of the tournament this early on? Could Rapha, winner of all Quake Live tournaments since 2008, finally lose? You can see a list of all the group stage matches here.

Here is also a video of the final map between Cooller and Rapha. A very emotional, tense moment. It shows the last two minutes of ZTN (The final map).

World of Warcraft

Although the event is only two days in, we have already seen the WoW finals taken place. With convincing wins by SK Korea, Button Mashers, and Mouz Asia, it would seem any of these amazing teams would of been able to win it all. We had also seen Complexity.Black (Formerly known as Check Six, winners of the WoW IEM North American Championship) place very low in their group, making them unable to play on to the playoffs. For all the matches for group stages, please click here.

For the playoffs, we saw a surprisingly large amount of victories from EG, a team that most saw wasn't going to win. But sure enough, with an almost blowout win against Dignitas (4:1), EG are your world champions for World of Warcraft.

Other Issues?

The ESL IEM Finals did see some technical difficulties in day one and some in day two also. The issues seemed to be a DDOS attack on the network. They were able to identify that 1000 different IP's were attacking the network, causing lag in most of their games. You can read more about it here.

So did some players experience it? They sure did, and on video! (Pay attention to his screen!)
