After all of the members had left me hanging a few months back, I was held with a difficult decision. As many of you may or may not know, our old Left 4 Dead team was very dominant. Formed only two weeks after the game was released, we formed a team that with little changes showed us at the top of the competitive scene. Once we got to the top, we remained there for a little over 6 months. At this point, all of the former members in exception of me decided to "take a break" from the game, which led to them quitting leaving me the only member left on the roster.
With this being said, I had a little discussion with Vertigo on what exactly to do with the situation. Was I to quit the game? Should I quit Area 51 and look for another team? The answer is no. We both decided that the real decision would be to reform another dominant team that would soon be back at the top. The goal that was set was to build up a team in time to participate in The GXL and take home first place, then lead into Left 4 Dead 2 as strong as ever.
For awhile, things weren't looking so well for me. I spent just over a month trying different people out, and trying to find people that matched my own play style and fit well together. Many people thought I was crazy for doing so, because most of the skilled players were already on teams, and those who were not on teams lacked competitive experience because of the game being somewhat new.
After precious time had passed, I was faced with yet another difficult decision. I needed to find someone for a team, and fast. Luckily enough I came across a team known as .Survivor which had only four members. This team had exactly the experience I was looking for, and I liked their style of play, so I decided to approach them and compromise a deal. I would join their roster and work for my starting spot and prove worthy, and they would fill the vacant spot as Area 51's new Left 4 Dead team.
Sadly enough, two of our members decided to leave us because they had other plans in their mind, and left our roster as following: FooL, KoRn, and Mata - and the two that left: numbers and Monztuh. As this left us in a difficult position, we decided to look at it on the bright side; This left room for improvement on our roster. I decided to point out KiLLaToY which I had given a tryout to prior to picking up .Survivor. We decided to give him a shot, and he proved worthy. Our new roster had been formed, and the only thing left was to gain chemistry and learn exactly how everyone can play the best through communication.
Surely enough, we had work to do, and in short time. At this point we had a little less than a month to prepare for The GXL. We progressed rather fast, and went on to face most of the top teams in the Left 4 Dead community. We scrimmed and practiced almost daily, and when it came time to pack everything up to leave for New Jersey, we felt confident. We showed up, and ended up having to play the finals with very short time due to delays. The tournament was double elimination, so we had a little room for mistake, but none the less we still wanted to win. We ended up winning 1st place with an overall record of 4-1, losing once in the finals due to our short time to finish everything. We came back strong after the loss beating Blight (dpv) Gaming in the 2nd finals match, ensuring our dominant presence within the Left 4 Dead community once again.
Now our team is awaiting Left 4 Dead 2, which is scheduled to release on November 17, 2009. Most teams from Left 4 Dead will be moving to this, as it has much more content than Left 4 Dead had. The game is already being considered as a top competition game, as WCG has put it on the list for possible games to be featured in 2010. You can help us out and vote for it here: http://www.wcg.com/6th/POLL/poll_PTT.asp . It is real easy to do, and will not take more than 1 minute.
Be on the lookout as our team looks to make a huge splash in Left 4 Dead 2, hopefully to win some big tournaments and leagues and show that Area 51 is on the prowl once again.
