Patrick Here - Vol. 1 Posted by StPatrick on 09/01/2010
This is my first blog, so I'll introduce myself first.

I am Patrick "St.Patrick" Burton of the Area 51 Team Fortress 2 team.  I play "roaming" soldier.  Today is my day off so I figured I'd sit down and write a blog.

Today I woke up, no sooner than 1pm, took a shower, ate breakfast, then of course played a little bit of TF2.  In a little bit I'll probably go to the gym, maybe watch some TV or hang out with a friend afterward, and then I'll start getting ready to practice with my team.  Typically when I'm given a day off on a weekday, it will follow a similar routine as the one I just listed.

Usually around 9pm EST I'll get a message from one of my teammates saying "scrim", or "scrimz?" from the nerdier ones.  This is shortly followed by the team and I hopping on mumble (similar to ventrilo), talking a little bit of trash to each other, then looking for a decent scrim that will help prepare us for our future matches.  Now that we're in invite, we try to scrim exclusively against invite teams, as this will give us the best quality practice.  It usually takes us anywhere from 10-20 minutes to find a decent scrim, so mumble will be filled with "Do we have a scrim yet?, or "Patrick find a scrim already."  It can get very annoying.  After a little bit of waiting, something amazing happens...we find a scrim.  We all hop in the server and the fun begins.

Up until the past few days we were in a bit of a slump.  I mostly blame myself.  Due to some real life issues, my mind was not where it should have been.  I was playing bad to say the least.  I completely changed my play style from what it usually is.  I was playing passive, attempting to get a good k/d ratio and trying to keep our medic alive.  This is the exact opposite of what a roamer is supposed to do.  It took about a week of bad scrim performances for me to realize what was happening.  I wasn't creating opportunities for my team to take advantage of, and I wasn't playing to my strengths.  My teammates are all great fraggers.  I, on the other hand, lack that 1v1 death match ability.  My DM is decent, but not good enough to rely on on a consistent basis.  So what I try to do is damage and distract things enough (staying alive when possible) for my team to come in and clean up with their superior aim and fragging ability.  I also have been making a huge effort to make sure I'm communicating my position, ideas, enemy locations, and much more to my team.

The past few days, scrim performances have been at an all time high in my opinion.  Communication is where it needs to be most of the time, which results in MUCH better coordination and teamwork,  which results in a lot more killing and point capping for our team.

Can't wait for the ESEA season to start!
